I love farmers markets. I’ve visited them all over the world, but I’m especially fond of the markets in Ann Arbor and Chicago, where I have spent the most time. I recently wrote about the Ann Arbor market’s efforts to operate in the COVID-19 pandemic world.
In doing so, I realized something: the majority of vendors that I buy from are women. In Ann Arbor, I have my geranium lady, my herb lady, my blueberry lady, and my Middle Eastern food lady. In Chicago, I had my pie lady. Wherever I go, I see many women in charge at many stalls, working with and next to men.
What’s it like to be a female vendor at a farmer’s market? How do the economics shape up? What the challenges that all vendors face now? And, can a farmers market stall fuel bigger things in the culinary world? (It did for Paula Haney at Hoosier Mama Pie Company.)
On Sunday, we’ll go shopping, and find out. You’ll also meet our CulinaryWoman of the Week, and hear about a new cookbook that answers some questions you may have had about a plant-based food trend.
We love seeing all the new people who have discovered CulinaryWoman. Be sure to recommend us to your friends and networks. They’re welcome to sign up.
See you Sunday.
